Hard work pays off for Mataian wetlands farm owner
Visitors to the Shin-liu recreational farm are usually amazed at the variety of colors, sounds and smells with which they are greeted."Please enjoy the beauty of the natural environment to the fullest, "Mr. Chin-lang Chu, the owner of the farm and the president of the local community regeneration association, would tell his guests.
The farm is located within the Mataian wetlands at the foot of Masi Mountain in Guangfu Township Hualien County. When he was looking to establish the recreation farm , Chu saw the potential of the area and chose the natural attributes of the local natural environment as the main theme of the Shin-liu farm.
He offered visitors an opportunity to sample meals that feature local agricultural produce and fish and to learn about indigenous agricultural practices.
In the view of some people, Chu's efforts have paid off well."Lucky you, living in such a wonderful environment and making a living from it," one tourist said to him.
The Mataian Wetland Ecological Park is a traditional settlement of the indigenous Ami people. When Chu first began the work of setting up a recreational farm there, the local indigenous people raised concerns that he would exploit and deplete the natural resources. Chu's response was to buy local produce and employ local people as tour guides to work in the farm's recreational programs. Since then, the farm has not only created more job opportunities in the community, but has also boosted local tourism.
Chu said his goal is to creat an environment that would encourage young people to devote their time and efforts to developing their home towns. "In order to lure young people back to the rural villages, it is essential to draft plans for the management of an agricultural ecosystem and a cultural environment as well as the revitalization of the local industries," Chu said.
