Profile

This Branch was formerly known as “Tainan Office, Food Bureau of Taiwan Province” subordinate to Food Bureau of Taiwan Province Government. The Bureau took over the operations of the “Food Department, Agriculture and Commerce Bureau of Taiwan Government” of the Japanese colonial period. Through several organizational reforms, it became subject to the Provincial Government. At that time, this Branch took over the operations of “Tainan Office, Food Department, Agriculture and Commerce Bureau of Taiwan Provincial Government” and established the general affairs section and business section. Its subordinate organizations include Chiayi and Touliu offices in charge of the food issues in the Chiayi and Tainan areas.

In 1949, in order to help in distribution of foods and salt, the Food Bureau of Taiwan Province established the “Food Administration” dedicated to supply and marketing of salt and promotion of incentives to pig farms and production and marketing of food grains. To handle these responsibilities, this Branch established the foods section and sub-sections, and expanded it’s internal functions in August 1953 by reforming the two sections into five sections and two offices. Accordingly, the business of the original foods section was included into that of the 5th section.

In July 1966, this Branch was reformed into “Tainan Administration, Food Bureau of Taiwan Province” and “Chiayi and Yunlin Branches, Tainan Administration, Food Bureau of Taiwan Province” and also established a 6th section in charge of the materials, facilities and supplies of pesticide related to the increase in production of foods.

In April 1979, this Branch was reformed into “Tainan Administration, Food Bureau of Taiwan Province Government” and “Chiayi and Yunlin Branches, Tainan Administration, Food Bureau of Taiwan Province Government”.

On July 1, 1999, according to Paragraph 2 of Article 5 of the Preliminary Statute for Adjustment of Functional and Operational Organization of Taiwan Province Government, the four administrations of Food Bureau of Taiwan Province Government, including Chiayi, Tainan, Kaohsiung and Pingtung Administrations, and Penghu Branch were reorganized and became subordinate to the “Southern Region Grain Administration, Ministry of Agriculture, Executive Yuan”. Its jurisdiction covered Chiayi County and City, Tainan County and City, Kaohsiung County and City, Pingtung County and City, and Penghu County. Meanwhile, it also established branch offices in Chiayi, Kaohsiung, Pingtung and Penghu in charge of the food policies about production of grains, storage, investigation of grain price and marketing of fertilizer, etc. in southern Taiwan.

On January 30, 2004, in order to cope with the government policy about simplified organization, strengthened functions and regional agricultural development, this Branch also included the agricultural policy business in addition to the original grain business and was reformed to the “Southern Region Branch, Agriculture and Food Agency, the Ministry of Agriculture, Executive Yuan”. Its jurisdiction covers Chiayi County and City, Tainan County and City, Kaohsiung County and City, Pingtung County and City, and Penghu County. In addition to executing the agriculture and food policies, it is also dedicated to dealing with farmers’ needs and comments in order to be oriented towards the fine-quality, recreational, safe and environmental protection agricultural development, and to ensure the safe inventory of foods to meet the need of the armed force and civilians to fulfill the targets and strategies under the various agriculture and food policies and develop the diversified functions of production, living and ecology of the agriculture and food industry.
