Domestic Fresh Pork Traceability System Kicks Off

2016-07-29

The Council of Agriculture (COA) will officially launch in September the “Domestic Fresh Pork Traceability System”, which has been planned for years. After that, consumers can either use handheld devices to scan QR code on the traceability indication board shown at vendors (by adding friends via LINE or downloading QR code APP). Or they can use computers to enter the website http://farm.naif.org.tw/ on checking page, key in the 8-digit code on the traceability indication board shown at vendors, which can show the auction date, auction market and origin farm of hog.

The COA said that over 85% of the domestic hogs currently come from transactions of the nation’s 23 meat markets. The other 15% is sent to the slaughterhouses for slaughtering. Therefore, to distinguish domestic pork from imported pork, the COA has implemented a policy of "Hogs Originated from Single Farm" since 2011, which can accurately verify the hogs records of meat markets and key in the information system. Since 2015, the COA has coordinated with pig farms, meat markets and meat associations to further promote the “Domestic Fresh Pork Traceability System.” The website is online now and will be officially in operation in September. Consumers are welcome to check online the source of the pork they buy, so that people can rest assured to buy and eat.

The COA explained the meaning of 8-digit code on the traceability indication board (for example FG28-1111): first digit stands for the auction market; second digit refers to the auction month, sequentially from A to L; third and fourth digits represent the auction date; last four digits are serial numbers to check information about the origin farm of hog.

The COA has actively trained the nation’s meat vendors and distributed traceability indication boards. It is scheduled that from September, consumers are able to check online the source of the pork at vendors in traditional markets.

The COA claimed that domestic pork is produced locally and passes through meat inspection carried by veterinarians. As it is nutritious, fresh and delicious, consumers are thus encouraged to purchase more. The “Domestic Fresh Pork Traceability System” website can disclose anytime information about the source of the pork consumers buy, so that people can rest assured to buy and eat.
