Tips to Make Balcony Gardening Easier

In urban areas, recreational and leisure space is rare as tall buildings are situated close to each other. The limited space of balconies is the only available option for plant lovers to indulge in their hobbies.

Balcony plants can be classified into three types by light adaptation, including sun plants, mild-shade plants and shade-tolerant plants, according to Mr. Chen, Kun-tsan, deputy engineer of Hsi Liu Environmental Greening Foundation, a nonprofit organization that promotes gardening.

Most of the balcony plants are sun plants and mild-shade plants.
Some plants have stronger environment adaptability and grow well whether in the sun or in mild-shade environments.

However, some plants are sensitive to environmental humidity and giving them too much water may cause their roots to rot easily. Mr. Chen suggested that using soil with good drainage, such as soil media, is a good method to prevent diseases in such plants.

Good air circulation is essential to garden plants growing well on balconies; on the other hand, poor air circulation may cause insect pests damage.

Trimming branches and leaves, which depends on the growth density of plants, and maintaining good air circulation are important principles of growing garden plants.
Organic fertilizers can be applied to garden plants two times a year, in March and in June respectively. As for the timing of repotting plants and adding soil, it depends on when plants get to the point of becoming pot-bound.

Garden plants seem easy to grow and care for, but in fact, ensuring the plants’ health involves various kinds of knowledge. To grow plants rising and flourishing, one should take account of the plants’ peculiarities and the influence of surrounding environments.
It is also good to learn from experience, and to care for the plants with patience and attentiveness.
