The Domestic Agricultural Situation

Let's look first at production statistics for 2010. Farm production fell as a result of natural disasters, the catch for the inshore fishing industry also fell, and production of pigs and chickens declined. Production of eggs and dairy products, on the other hand, increased. Total value of production in the agriculture sector was NT$404 billion, an increase of 0.43% over 2009. Of this total, farm production accounted for 45.81%, animal husbandry 33.04%, fishing and aquaculture 21.04%, and forestry 0.11%.

In terms of agricultural trade, in 2010 Taiwan imported US$12.759 billion worth of agricultural products, an increase of 27.01% over 2009. The main imports were grains and good processed from grains, oilseeds and oilseed powder, and lumber and secondary lumber goods. Taiwan exported US$3.969 billion worth of agricultural goods, an increase of 23.73% over 2009. Main exports included fisheries products and items processed therefrom, as well as leather and secondary leather goods.

Turning to prices of agricultural goods in 2010, the average wholesale price index (WPI) for all farms, forestry, fisheries, and animal husbandry products rose 4.67% over 2009. The main reason was the rise in the cost of imported raw materials. Breaking down the numbers, products from crops rose by 1.05%, from forestry by 14.41%, from fisheries by 9.79%, and from animal husbandry by 2.38%.
