Taiwan’s first mudflows and landslides drill wedding held

On March 18th at 12 o’clock Taiwan’s first “mudflows and landslides drill wedding” took place at the Bi Hu community center of Mei-Shan , Jiayi County. Su Chia Chuen, the minister of the Council of Agriculture acted as witness of the wedding, the happy ending to a story of a mudflows and landslides prevention specialist and his coming to the aid of a beautiful woman who went hiking with friends to a Mountain of Bi Hu Village of Mei Shan and found themselves endangered in sudden heavy rainfall.

The COA’s Soil and Water Conservation Bureau had been working continuously with local governments to train specialists for the prevention of mudflows and landslides. And Mr.Chang Ho-teh a specialist of the bureau worked at Bi Hu Village of Mei Shan.

The COA said that in August, last year the female protagonist of the story, Ms. Yang Ying Yu, and her friends went hiking to Er Jiang Mountain and found themselves trapped. Lin Mei-mei then the chairwoman of the Taiping Community of Er Jiang Mountain and called Chang. Later, Lin was also instrumental in Yang and Chang getting to know each other better. The two fell in love and decided to marry on March 18th, this year.

Ms. Yang currently by also works on the Mudflows and Landslides Prevention Specialists Team of the Soil and Water Conservation Bureau. She is responsible for measuring changes of rainfall in mountain areas and helps in the data transmission of disaster signals and evacuation.

Mr.Chang has been actively working on mudflows and landslides prevention and the COA decided to sponsor a “mudflows and landslides drill wedding” with COA Minister Su as witness. During their wedding, the couple performed a drill to demonstrate their skills in the prevention of mudflows and landslides.

Minister Su said that mudflows and landslides prevention is volunteer work. It requires passion for service and love for the land. The prevention work takes off from the efforts of the government to lower the incidence of disasters due to landslides. It fosters a relationship very much like that in a good family where close cooperation and mutual trust exist.
