Optimal use management needed in developing agricultural resources

2006-04-13
To adequately develop agricultural resources and establish a consultation system for cities and counties committed to agricultural development, the Council of Agriculture (COA) starting this year, will assist city and county governments on how to wisely use their available resources. The COA will start assisting the five counties of Hsinchu, Miaoli, Taichung, Tainan and Taitung. The Council will help them to develop based on their unique features and in line with national objectives by establishing a spatial development model that integrates the various sectors of the agricultural industry and seeks the optimal use of their farm resources.
Recent economic transformation and population increase have given rise to Taiwan’s agricultural land and resources being diverted to different uses. However, agricultural resources should remain unspoiled in order to prevent the general public from being overly concerned about the safety of agricultural products.
In order to cope with the many issues confronted by the agricultural industry, the COA implemented a policy of orderly development in 2003. In 2005, it completed the first operational model for such a nationwide development at the city, county, village, and township levels.
The Council stresses that promoting agricultural spatial resource development needs policy planning and cross-department coordination on the local level in order to form a consensus. For successful implementation of this policy, besides the professional training and technical support, the Council will also establish an overall consultation team to assist the county and city governments in their task of integrating resources to effectively carry out this program.
